I don't know how to play the violin. (Yes, but what does that have to do with yoga?)
Imagine if each time you decided to learn something new, you were stopped because you didn't already know how to do that thing you decided to learn how to do. I know that sounds crazy but I hear it all the time. People tell me they don't practice yoga because they can't touch their toes. Or they say they are “bad at yoga” because they aren't flexible. Picture just deciding one day that you are going to run a marathon....that day! It doesn't quite make sense. People train for months before even attempting to complete a marathon.
My niece started playing the violin when she was four. Imagine her telling the teacher that she couldn't play the violin because she didn't know how. It seems a little silly in that light. Yet so often that sentiment keeps folks from the amazing gift of yoga. Yoga can heal us from anxiety, help us get physically fit, and free our lives from the grip of chronic pain. (And that's just a tiny portion of what it can do for us.)
I will share a little secret with you. Okay, it's no secret. I couldn't touch my toes when I started yoga! But I just kept showing up and one day I could. On that day, a genie granted me three wishes! No, no, he didn't. My point is, throw those fears away or keep them and show up on your mat anyway. And show up the next day and the next.
Come be “flaw-some” with me! We're in this together.
